INVESTING IN VINTAGE OVAL TRACK RACE CARS

Its not unreasonable to say that we are in very scary financial times. And that goes for all of us; rich, poor, and those of us in-between.  From the stock market to real estate, once "sure bets" are failing to preserve wealth the way we wanted them to.  But.......there is something out there that is not only a great investment, but great fun, and that is the sport of Vintage Car Racing in general and vintage oval track racing in particular.  On June 14th 2008, RM Auctions held the long awaited sale of Joe's Garage.  The results were beyond anyone's wildest dreams.  All expectations were greatly exceeded.  Go here:
http://www.rmauctions.com/AuctionResults.cfm?SaleCode=JG08 and view the results. Click on the individual listings and you will see the estimates, and compare those to the selling price.  Don't forget to add the 10% buyers premium to every hammer price.  And remember, all of this was done with a recession and/or a depression in full swing!  Rick Carey of Vintage Oval Magazine recently wrote the following about the Joe's Garage auction : "....Now collectors, particularly collectors who aren't familiar with the market for and values of oval racers, have a benchmark.  That mark has been carved very high on the bench.  While the results of RM Auctions Joe's Garage sale won't instantly transform all old Sprint and Champ cars into 200-400,000 collectors items, transactions WILL BE measured by the standards set here for some time to come.  It is an historical event in the market for vintage oval machinery...."

This car has been sold, but for the curious, the pictures can be found here.

Below are some pictures of this car during its "glory years".  As number 96, the below pic is with Brent Kaeding at the wheel, circa the Indianapolis State Fairgrounds 5/23/86.
